Summer Camp

Why should I choose summer camp?

If your child could design a perfect summer, it would probably include plenty of playmates, new things to do every day, and a chance to see new things.  Year after year, kids discover such perfect summers at the Deerfield Community Center’s Summer Day Camp.

Benefits of summer camp:

Learn new skills: What they learn every day might change, but they will be learning.  Summer camp offers kids new experiences they may not have staying at home or going to day care.  Kids grow and learn at camp every single day.

Get energy out. Summer camp is fantastic for kids because it can help them exercise, have fun and really just do something all day so that they stay productive. It is a common occurrence that the less you do, often the more lazy and tired you get. If you keep your child active in a summer camp, it will be less of a transition to go back to school.
Socialize: Summer camp is fantastic for kids in that it allows them to socialize with their friends, while doing other things. Instead of hanging out on the couch playing video games, kids get to socialize with other kids who enjoy the same types of things, and do so while learning new skills, exercising and having fun. It is a fantastic way for kids to get important social time with their peers.

Stay busy: Camp is a great way for kids to stay busy. Sometimes summer becomes the time when kids get in trouble because they are bored. A kid who has nothing to do will usually find something to do, which usually means that they find trouble.

Have fun: The biggest thing with summer camp is that it is fun for kids. They get to go on field trips, socialize, have new experiences and have something to look forward to every single day.

So, what would my child be doing every day?

Each week is broken down into a theme.  Samples of themes we have used in the past are Creative Campers, Minute to Win It, Sports Extravaganza, Summer Camp Underwater, Recycled Masterpieces, etc.  Then, we start choosing activities we can do, books we can read, games we can play, contests we can have and a field trip we can go on that surround this theme.  We squeeze as much as we can into one week.  Plus, we still do our weekly activities like going to the library, playing in the gym, working in the computer lab, cooking, watching a camp movie and going to the park.  If we can, we try to make all of these activities fit the theme, too!  A sample week of summer camp would look something like this:

12:00-12:30           Lunch/Assembly

12:30-1:00             Large Group Activity

1:00-1:30               Craft Time

1:30-2:00               Craft Time

2:00-2:30               Journal Time

2:30-2:45               Afternoon Snack

2:45-3:30               Stations:  Small Group Activities

3:30-4:00               Staff Choice:  Outdoor Game

4:00-4:30               Assembly/Reading Time

4:30-5:30               Clean Up/Playground Time

*Weekly Excursions:  Monday-Library, Tuesday-Park, Wednesday-Computer Lab, Thursday-Field Trip, Fri-Cooking/Movie

**Full weeks are very similar, but include morning snack, additional group activities and extra playground time in the morning.
